What is Pelvic Health Physiotherapy?
Pelvic health physiotherapy is an evidence-based, specialized area of physiotherapy focused on the muscles, nerves, and connective tissues of the pelvic floor and surrounding regions. It can play a key role in managing bladder and bowel symptoms, pelvic pain, pregnancy and postpartum recovery, and sexual function. At Maloney Elkassem Wellness in St. Albert, Jenna Truelove provides individualized pelvic health assessment and treatment in a private, respectful setting.

Our Assessment Approach
A pelvic health assessment is private, respectful, and consent-based. Your physiotherapist takes time to understand your history, concerns, and goals before any physical examination. Where appropriate, assessment may include external examination and, with your explicit informed consent, an internal pelvic floor assessment. You are always in control of what is included, and treatment never requires consent to internal examination.
What Treatment May Include
Pelvic floor muscle training (strengthening, relaxation, coordination — Kegels are not always the answer and are not always helpful)
Breathing and core retraining
Manual therapy and myofascial techniques
Behavioural strategies for bladder and bowel symptoms
Return-to-exercise and return-to-sport progressions
Postpartum rehab, including diastasis recti programming
Education and self-management strategies
Integration with the MeBella Pelvic Floor Chair where clinically appropriate
Why Care Inside a Multidisciplinary Clinic
Pelvic symptoms often connect to low back pain, hip dysfunction, posture, breathing patterns, stress, and sleep. At Maloney Elkassem Wellness, pelvic health physiotherapy can be coordinated with chiropractic care, massage therapy, acupuncture, and counselling where that supports your goals — all in one location in St. Albert.
Privacy and Comfort
Appointments take place in a private treatment room. You can bring a support person. You can pause, stop, or decline any part of the assessment at any time. We follow a trauma-informed, consent-first approach throughout care.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a referral?
No referral is required to book pelvic health physiotherapy. Some insurance plans may require a referral for reimbursement — we can help you check.
Is pelvic health physiotherapy only for women?
No. Men also benefit from pelvic health physiotherapy, especially for post-prostatectomy incontinence, pelvic pain, and chronic prostatitis-like symptoms.
Can I come during pregnancy or shortly postpartum?
Yes. Pelvic health physiotherapy during pregnancy and in the postpartum period is well established. Timing of specific assessments and treatments will be individualized to your situation.
Does assessment always involve internal examination?
No. Internal assessment is one tool used only when clinically indicated and only with your explicit informed consent. Many concerns can be well assessed and treated with external examination, education, and exercise.
Is this covered by insurance?
Pelvic health physiotherapy is physiotherapy and is covered by most extended health plans in the same way as other physiotherapy services.
What should I wear?
Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. You may be asked to change into shorts for parts of the assessment.
