SUFFERING FROM HIP PAIN OR BURSITIS?
Hip pain is often thought to be caused by arthritis, but it frequently arises from injury or irritation to the soft tissue surrounding the hip. When not arthritic, the most common culprits are hip bursitis and IT band tendonitis. These conditions can result from either trauma (such as sprains or muscle strains) or chronic repetitive strain (like swinging a golf club, lifting, bending, or running).
While significant muscle tears, bone fractures, or arthritis can cause hip pain, tendonitis and bursitis are far more prevalent.
UNDERSTANDING HIP PAIN
Several factors can contribute to hip pain, including:
Inflammation
Muscle spasms
Soft tissue adhesion and fibrosis
Mechanical joint irritation
Poor posture
Altered foot biomechanics
Nerve irritation
Muscle weakness
Chronic hip pain often results from a vicious cycle that begins with irritated or injured tissue, leading to inflammation and muscle spasms. This progression results in nerve irritation and pain, which can cause the formation of soft tissue adhesions. These adhesions scar the tissue, leading to dysfunction and increased susceptibility to further irritation or injury, perpetuating the cycle.
In the case of hip bursitis or tendonitis, inflammation and soft tissue adhesions can prevent the smooth movement of the iliotibial (IT) band tendons, causing friction and further irritation, inflammation, and pain.
Moreover, altered foot mechanics—often stemming from conditions like pronation or flat feet—can create functional changes at the hip level, increasing strain on the soft tissues surrounding the hip.
